ACTIVE over PASSIVE
It’s our experience that most patients do their best when they start an “ACTIVE” Rehab program. Patients who seek out and only want passive care, meaning where we do something to you, rather than you do something for yourself, tend to be in pain longer.
This does not mean “JUST MOVE”. We often say this to over simplify, and it can have disastrous consequences. We have to be more strategic, flexible, and persistent in how we apply an active treatment approach.
Don’t get us wrong, passive treatments have their place. They can definitely be helpful in getting you out of pain and starting with an active plan. We know the social media posts of therapists using their hands look appealing and nice. However, we want to be honest with you and not sell you on false ideals. We encourage you not to judge a rehab clinic on what they can do with their hands, but rather how they can take you beyond that point. What systems, equipment, and principles do they use to get you functioning better? How do they get you back on your feet, doing your own exercise to make yourself better….. and stay there.
The reality about manual therapy is that it DOES NOT FIX ANYTHING. It’s more of a neuromodulator, that clears the way for healthy movement. The sensory input from our hands produces a motor output from our brains, resulting in a temporary reduction in stiffness, decrease in pain perception, and increased soft tissue function. If treatment is done correctly it will lower adverse muscle tone, lubricate a joint(s), reduce skin stickiness, and nourish cells (during and after). Notice I did not say fix or put back in place bones or break up scar tissue.
Here are some things we often to say to clients,
“You can out function bad structure”, and
‘Tightness is a neurological thing, not a structural thing”.
